I don’t normally get involved in topics like this on my blog, but after today learning of Jon Venables being sent to prison again, I wanted to say my bit.
I am the same age as Venables and his fellow murderer, Robert Thompson, who both killed James Bulger in 1993. Despite only being 10, I remember the story well. You couldn’t avoid it – it was everywhere.
The sentence handed out to Jamie’s killers was arguably too short. However, this is not the purpose of this blog…
Venables was today found guilty of possessing indecent images of children and sentenced to 40 months in prison. He also owned a paedophile manual (what the Hell is that, and what kind of person would own such a thing?). This is not his first conviction, after being released following his sentence for murder.
Given the fact Venables keeps reoffending – especially given the serious nature of his crimes – it has to be asked if he should ever be released from prison. I don’t believe so.
Venables has had so many chances, it is obvious he is beyond rehabilitation. I am strongly against the death penalty, but for the safety of children, I now think that he should be locked up for the rest of his life. He is a very dangerous individual.
When he is released in 40 months time, what evidence is there to say he won’t offend again? Would the judge who gave Venables his latest short sentence be so lenient if he or she knew that the child killer and sex offended, would be living on the same street as their kids?
