It’s been a long time since Leeds United spent some money on a player. I mean proper money – over a million pounds. Richard Cresswell in 2005, in fact. Therefore, I was most pleased this week to learn of the signing of highly sought-after midfielder, Luke Murphy from Crewe for a grand total of… say it like Dr Evil… “One million pounds”
What happened? Where did this money come from? I have no idea. Presumably somebody at Leeds United won the Euromillions or found a wad of cash in the bottom drawer of our recently departed and of course beloved ex-chairman, Ken Bates. I think it’s best to stick to the same story “Ask me no questions, I’ll tell you no lies” if questioned about the source of the funds.
The purchase of Murphy was on top of signing Matt Smith from Oldham last month. Apparently he shares his name with some chap who plays Dr Who, which I don’t watch, so is irrelevant to me. I am aware of him for scoring against Everton and Liverpool in the FA Cup earlier in the year.
We were treated to a third signing yesterday. The somewhat inevitable acquisition of Noel Hunt. Inevitable because Brian McDermott is our manager, and just like how Paddy Kenny follows Neil Warnock everywhere, and Macaulay Culkin was never too far away from Michael Jackson, Hunt is Brian McDermott’s footballing son.
After making three good signings in a short space of time, you would think I would be satisfied. However, after seven years of what can only be described as “shit”, I am ravenous for more players to join up with McDermott at Elland Road. The good news for me is more are on the way (apparently).
With Ken Bates gone and his minions, Shaun Harvey and Gwyn Williams, now a thing of the past, the tide is turning at Leeds. A sleeping football giant is stirring. We’re waking up and the shit is going to go down. Watch out, Leeds United are coming back… and we’re dirtier than before.
